Tuesday is a day of remembrance for two saints, St. James the Apostle and St. Christopher, the patron saint of drivers and travelers. St. Christopher was once known as one of the Fourteen Helpers, who were called upon during famine, epidemics, plagues, and natural disasters. Legend says that he served pagan rulers until he was baptized and repented for his past life. He then settled on the Jordan River and helped pilgrims cross the river safely. During one crossing, he carried a child on his back and felt an immense weight that almost caused him to drown. Then, he heard a voice saying, "I am Jesus, your Savior. When you carry me, you carry the weight of the world." This is why he was given the name Christoforos, which means "Christ-bearer." St. Christopher's story is a beautiful reminder of drivers' important role in serving passengers and safely transporting them to their destinations. He is the patron saint of drivers and all transport-related professions, such as carriers, raftsmen, pilgrims, tourists, sailors, and porters. It is important to bless our cars since they are a significant part of our lives and can threaten ourselves and others. By dedicating all aspects of our lives to God, we can ensure that we are always safe and protected.
In honor of St. Christopher's memorial, we will bless your cars after every Holy Mass on Sunday July 29- 30.
